Campaign For A Democratic Rye

The work of the Campaign for a Democratic Rye Group is aimed entirely at restoring power and decision making locally. It seeks to encourage Rye Councillors to face up to Rother and claim back what was taken from it in 1974. At the Public Meeting, held at the Rye Community Centre in November the numbers of people attending were a bit better than those that attend meetings of the Town Council, perhaps there is a message here somewhere. The Politics of Wind Farming

By Peter Etherden

Slicing up flocks of Canadian geese as they wing their way across Romney Marsh is one way to keep bird flu at bay. But this underestimates avian intelligence. Migrating birds only fly along the English shipping lanes because the French peasants are gunning for them on the other side of the channel. Birds are quick learners which is more than can be said for the human species. Continue reading The Politics of Wind Farming

A Better Way For Rye

A copy of the handbill issued by the Campaign for a Democratic Rye at the Public Meeting on November 14.

When the reorganisation of local government took place in 1974 Rye lost not only power over its own affairs but most of its land and property as well. Continue reading A Better Way For Rye

Rother has Failed Us

If proof were ever needed that Rother District Council has failed this town then I ask readers to read the words in the following columns that have been reprinted as they were written in November 2001. (This was from a 2005 issue of Rye’s Own)

Four years on and every single one of them could have been written yesterday. Some of the issues are slightly different but the results are always the same. Rye loses out every time. Broken promises, failed deadlines, wasted money and even downright lies have been the order of the day. Continue reading Rother Has Failed Us

Tesco Store a Fait Accompli

Rye M.P. Michael Foster revealed at a meeting aimed at stopping the giant retail chain Tesco from coming to Rye that “It’s a done deal” and there is very little that can be done to prevent a large store being built on the Ferry Road old Primary School site unless Rother District Council refuses planning permission. Even then Tesco could appeal to the Secretary for State who has the power to over ride the local refusal. Continue reading Tesco Store a Fait Accompli

Pen & Ink

Dear Editor,Several times a week I have occasion to risk life and limb by running the gauntlet of the Rye Harbour Road. Despite the assurances in the September issue of Rye’s Own of work in progress on the Rye Harbour Road Cycle Path, I can assure readers of the October issue that absolutely nothing is happening. Partnership’s Plan Collapses

The collapse of Rye Partnership’s plan to construct a building that would house Rye Library has coincided with the call from a group of Rye residents, directly to the Government, to open an independent inquiry into the Partnership’s affairs, claiming there is a lack of ‘financial clarity’ and ‘tangible achievement’ in the town.
