Wheelers Open Letter to Tony Blair

The Wheelers Letter to Mr. Blair

Dear Prime Minister

Members of the Rye & District Wheelers have decided that you should be informed of a terrible act of neglect by local government here in Rye.

A lad was knocked off his bike and killed in a most horrible way on a notorious 2 mile stretch of road that leads from Rye to the village of Rye Harbour, he was just 22 years old. Continue reading Wheelers Open Letter to Tony Blair

                            EEC OUT – ROTHER OUT

We all thought a ‘common market’ would be a good idea. We could trade throughout Europe with ease. There would be no borders and a ‘free marketing area’ would make for easier trade. Continue reading Town Crier

Wish Street Car Park Under Threat

Planning approval is being sought for two blocks of five story flats on the old Gas Works site behind the Kettle O’ Fish. The site was originally deemed unsafe for building purposes because of the high chemical content in the ground left by the residue of tens of years of waste disposal from the gas producing process. It has been used as a car park since it was sold into private hands after the Gas Works Continue reading “Rye’s Own” News – May 2004

Marina Plan Has Fatal Flaw

Another Report from November 2003 Issue of “Rye’s Own”

A Marina Plan put forward by Millwood Designer Homes at the instigation of Rye Partnership has a fatal flaw.

The actual proposed Marina for 100 moorings and 100 homes on a site south of the River Brede opposite the stretch of river from Philips Boat Yard to the old Rother Iron Works Buildings, is quite feasible, but the idea of building a lock in the Rother Ironwork Areas to keep enough water in The Strand for boats to float at all times is a non starter and has already caused concern among knowledgable local folk, including Rye Fire Chief Andy Polly. Building Development Will Cause Flooding

By Cliff Bloomfield

I read with interest the article regarding a proposed housing development on the north side of Udimore Road in the April Issue. I think the points raised miss the main problems with such a scheme, that is the effect on the Tillingham Green Estate. In 1966 at that time I was serving the then Borough of Rye as the assistant surveyor, road flooding within the estate was becoming a problem during the winter months, it was caused when periods of heavy rain coincided with high tides, the Tillingham Sluice at Strand Quay would close thereby holding back an already swollen river level, flooding occurring initially within the estate road Continue reading Building Development Will Cause Flooding
