New hope has emerged that “Graham’s Way”, the cycle footpath from Rye Harbour to Rye, will at last, be completed. The pathway was fought for by Brian Matthews whose son Graham was killed on the dangerous path-less road that claimed eleven lives over a period of forty years. It’s good to see young people starting their own businesses despite the prevailing financial problems we see around us.
One such lady is Noonie Woodhouse, who has just started out with the Bosun’s Bite Cafe’ at Rye Harbour. The Rye Wheelers ‘gentle run’ dropped in on Remembrance Sunday after a round trip from Rye to Rye Harbour via Appledore, Lydd and Camber.
The run to Rye Harbour had a reason other than tasting the excellent refreshments provided at the Bosun’s. They were taking a look at the cycle / footpath that they were involved in forcing East Sussex County Council to build. They noted that the final section was still to be completed. Regular readers of “Rye’s Own” will know how this magazine has always fought for keeping community assets for the use of Ryer’s, often against great pressure and determination of elected and unelected bodies who have had ‘other plans’ for our precious land and buildings. At the time of writing (26 March 2010), Rye is waiting to hear who are going to be the new owners of the old Primary School in Ferry Road.
A meeting arranged ‘behind closed doors’ is expected to resolve who will be the purchaser.

Despite Rye Town Council’s approval of the plans for the new Primary School on ground adjacent to the Thomas Peacocke there are many who think the construction of the £6.5m. building on the proposed site is ill advised and detrimental to the education of Rye children.
