March 2010 – Tesco or Houses?

Tesco or Houses?

By Jim Hollands

At the time of writing (26 March 2010), Rye is waiting to hear who are going to be the new owners of the old Primary School in Ferry Road.
A meeting arranged ‘behind closed doors’ is expected to resolve who will be the purchaser.
Will it be Tesco, who have an option on the Adelaide Pub? To get their plans passed Tesco would need this because the main entrance is obstructed by ground owned by the Adelaide and use for car parking. I do not see Tesco getting planning permission on either the other entrance, off Tillingham Avenue or through a new entrance via the Swimming Pool entrance, constructed on the rough ground beside the railway.

Housing development, on the other hand, might well be allowed through
this possible rail side link.

Look at the ‘coincidences’ that might make this possible.
1. Rye Scouts have ground allotted for new scout hut.
2. The land north of the railway between The Grove and Ferry Road sold prior to auction. It is believed a development company had an option on this ground.
3. The ground was originally proposed by County Councillor Peter Jones as a site for ‘Affordable Housing’
4. The flooding restriction which precluded building on the site at that time has been lifted since the river defences have been raised.

We wait with baited breath.
