The Rye Flower And Vegetable Show

“FANTASTICTURN OUT”

The Rye in Bloom committee were absolutely delighted with the fantastic turn out of entries and visitors to their first Flower and Vegetable Show at the Community Centre last Saturday. Entries from all over Rye and surrounding areas came in thick and fast and there were over 160 exhibits of fruit, vegetables, handicraft and flowers on display showing how versatile and keen Rye gardeners are. The collapse of Rye Partnership’s plan to construct a building that would house Rye Library has coincided with the call from a group of Rye residents, directly to the Government, to open an independent inquiry into the Partnership’s affairs, claiming there is a lack of ‘financial clarity’ and ‘tangible achievement’ in the town. A Matter of Priorities

What would the average man in the street think was the greater death risk, visiting Rye Cemetery or riding a cycle along the Rye Harbour Road? Every single person I asked thought it was a stupid question, without exception they said riding to Rye Harbour. Ask the same question of Rother District Council, they are knocking down headstones in our cemeteries as fast as they can and look like having to shell out £34,000 of our money to pay for it. That money would have gone a long way towards building a cycle / footpath down the two mile ‘Death Road’ that so recently cost the life of 22 year old Graham Matthews.
