Baptist Church Vandalised

Rye Baptist Church lies no further that fifty paces from our Police Station, yet on a Sunday night at the end of June a great deal of mindless vandalism was done inside the Church. I noticed with interest the plans for a new library on the old Central Garage site.It seems that we shall soon see a new library rising from the space in Cinque Ports Street of the demolishing of what remained of the old Central Garage.I have a particular interest in this venture I do hope I shall last out to see it opened. I was born in the flat above the Garage in 1926, 77 years ago, and lived there until 1938 when we moved to Iden. My father Donald Hughes was the foreman at Central Garage hence our occupation of the flat.

Joe Schlesinger of the famed Canadian Broadcasting Company programme ‘Newsworld’ was at the Rye’s Own Office on Saturday 22 February to interview Editor Jim Hollands and Copy Reader Jo’ Vincent about their views on the situation regarding Iraq. British Aid for Deprived Children

Three years ago, Stuart Pope and I joined the ‘Convoy Of Hope’ driving trucks full of locally collected aid to Kosovo. This was run by a small privately run charity called British Humanitarian Aid and comprised of vehicles – small vans, trucks, a coach and an articulated lorry driven by volunteers from all over the country.

During this convoy Stuart and myself became friendly with a man called George Mills and he started telling us stories of his own charity run under the umbrella of British Humanitarian Aid. Continue reading Auction at the Riverhaven

The Prewar Rye Wheelers ran an annual “Winchelsea Road Sprint” to find the fastest sprinters in the club. The race, held on the newly built Winchelsea Road, took the form of two time trials over a distance of a quarter of a mile. One from a standing start position and one with a flying start.
