Rother has Failed Us

If proof were ever needed that Rother District Council has failed this town then I ask readers to read the words in the following columns that have been reprinted as they were written in November 2001. (This was from a 2005 issue of Rye’s Own)

Four years on and every single one of them could have been written yesterday. Some of the issues are slightly different but the results are always the same. Rye loses out every time. At a lively meeting, expertly and patiently chaired by Councillor Ian Potter Mayor of Rye a packed crowd were told by Rye County Councillor Keith Glazier that it was the Doctors of the Postern Gate Surgery that were insisting that their new premises should be built on the out of town Greenfield Site next to the Care Centre on the top of Rye Hill. Our Man Dan

” A Fine Example”

Dan Bevan, 29, was posted to Rye after qualifying as a PCSO in May 2004. He has done great work in the town. He has been partly responsible for the dramatic fall in the crime rate, especially vandalism, in Rye and was nominated for his hard work by Hastings and Rye MP Michael Foster.
Mr Foster said the Prime Minister told Mr Bevan he was a “fine example” and residents are lucky to have him.  Dan described the trip to Downing Street as a fantastic experience. “I was so proud to be nominated.”  Continue reading Our Man Dan

Three Hundred March – 1000 Sign

Three hundred people, including Rye M.P. Michael Foster, The Mayor of Rye Councillor Paul Carey, both our District Councillors, Granville Bantick and Sam Souster and almost every member of Rye Council, marched from the Postern Gate Surgery, via the appropriately named ‘Deadman’s Lane’ to the foot of Rye Hill, a hill that will no doubt have its name changed to ‘Heartbreak Hill’ if East Sussex County Council and PCT do not relent and allow the proposed move of the Postern Gate Surgery to be re-directed from the Memorial Care site to the old Ferry Road School location. Almost £30,000 Raised Towards New Ambulance

When the then Mayor of Rye, Peter Dyce, set a target of £42,000 to be raised to get the Rye St. John a new ambulance it seemed as though the task would be nigh impossible. Pride in Rye Week July 2003

Yolanda Cleans Up

Rye Town Manager, Yolanda Laybourne, led a gang of volunteers in a ‘Rubbish Pick’ as part of “Pride in Rye Week” at the beginning of July. This event is just one of the initiatives that Yolanda has introduced since her appointment just one year ago. There was some opposition to the introduction of a Town Manager, but

Yolanda has won round most of the critics with her enthusiasm and support of many aspects of Rye town life. She has co-opted the help of Rye, Rother and County Councillors, worked hard supporting various clubs and societies, encouraged tourism with a vigorous programme of advertising and publicity and supported the trade organisations. Another contribution that she should be pleased with is the step forward that the Rye Partnership has taken as a result of her efforts.
