A Rye Character

by R Wylson

Irascible, intelligent, cantankerous, scurrilous, interesting, perverse, opinionated, cultured, argumentative, frugal, irreverent. These are all adjectives used to describe Ernie Apps, who, by universal agreement, was indeed a Rye character. Continue reading Ernest Charles Apps

Dredging Strand Quay

Dredging Strand Quay

by Peter Etherden

This is a cautionary tale and I have cut corners in the telling. Rye’s trawler fleet has been decimated by the European Union over the past few decades and although a new Fishing Quay is finally under construction the part played by the Rye Fishmarket Project in the whole story has been written out of this shortened account which focuses on our failure to dredge Rye’s Strand Quay…something which has been done every few years since time immemorial. Amazing Day for Rye St. John

On Saturday 18 December Julie and Neville Bettley of Rye St. John Ambulance stood in open mouth amazement as Reg Walker, Charity Steward of the Rye Masonic Wellington Lodge, announced that “He who laughs last, laughs longest” and revealed a donation of £13,750 to the Ambulance Appeal.

Julie Bettley told me afterwards that they had been expecting a couple of hundred pounds and were absolutely staggered when the amount was announced. Neville told of the relief he felt that this would cover the outstanding sum required by March when the new ambulance would be delivered Continue reading Amazing Day for Rye St. John

The Things I Miss

By Jimper

I will not go on about the really obvious like a parking space with no time limit, youth or missed chances, for those are things you can never have again.

At times I still look to see the time at that blank window only to realise it went twenty years ago. The two way traffic system into Rye up Kings Street (Landgate) from Rye Hill. A hospital that catered for the silly little cuts and scratches mothers worry over, and the broken legs and arms they diagnosed and set. Continue reading The Things I Miss

Phillips Boatbuilders

The Phillips Family of Boatbuilders

The story of the Phillips family of boat builders started well before the turn of the 19th. Century. John Phillips was building boats at the Rock Channel well before 1886 because in 1886 he indentured his son Herbert, who left school at the age of twelve, as an apprentice in the business on the first day of that year. The original document, part of which is shown here, states that John Phillips “Shall instruct his apprentice in the art of Shipwrighting and Boatbuilding” and “Finding unto the said apprentice sufficient meat, drink, lodgings and all other necessaries during the said term.” Continue reading Phillips Boatbuilders
