Jempsons of Peasmarsh opened their new Self Service Store in 1972 and were soon inundated with new customers. The growth of the original village store to what it has become today is a remarkable story of the enterprise and hard work put in by the family and staff. In the days that Hastings had a town wall it would not have been surprising to find allusions to it in the names of the adjoining streets. Indeed, High Street itself developed along what was the road leading from the Sea Gate, whilst across the valley of the Bourne, All Saints Street was originally known as the ‘Kings Highways leading from the Pulpit Gate to the Minnes’. Members of the Peasmarsh Memorial Hall Management Committee recently received a cheque from Jempson’s of Peasmarsh for £465.29.

Remembering Woolies

The recent news that long-established Electrical Retailers, ‘Comet’ are to go into administration has had quite an effect on me. Always one to spend a fair amount of my time thinking of the past anyway, to see again the same tragic circumstances occurring, which, five years ago (yes, it has been that long already!) led to the closure of the beloved ‘Woolworths’ chain has made me very sad indeed. The Jolly Sailor

The Jolly Sailor first opened its doors as a beer house in Watchbell Street in 1830. Landlord Thomas Hearsfield applied for a full licence in 1831, and again successfully in 1832.
