Sometime after 1066 the first Norman Castle in England, constructed in stone, was built on what is now known as the West Hill. The original construction was of wood and it was not till some years later that the stone remains of that crumbling edifice that we know today as Hastings Castle came into being. The Crown All Saints Street

In the days that Hastings had a town wall it would not have been surprising to find allusions to it in the names of the adjoining streets. Indeed, High Street itself developed along what was the road leading from the Sea Gate, whilst across the valley of the Bourne, All Saints Street was originally known as the ‘Kings Highways leading from the Pulpit Gate to the Minnes’. Hastings Old Town Carnival Week is a mainly free event (that doesn’t mean you can’t give a donation!) organised jointly by the Hastings Old Town Carnival Association (www.1066.net/carnival) and the Old Hastings Preservation Society (www.ohps.org.uk). The Grand Opening of Old Town Week takes place on Saturday 31st July on Winkle Island and is followed by a full week of events.
