Almost 50 Years Since The First Rye’s Own

Back in 1965, as Bonfire Night approached, a new magazine appeared in the newsagents of the town. “Rye’s Own” was born. Volume 1, Number One, it read on the cover, the price was two shillings (10p). Rodney Booth, now manager at Skinner’s Motors, was among the Bonfire Boys featured on the cover at their secret hideaway where the torches were made to light the procession on the great night. Bonfire Celebrations in Bygone Years

What were those Bonfire Nights in Rye of more than sixty years ago really like?

So many stories are passed down by those senior citizens who were there. They tell of amazing burning boats being carted around the town, of fireworks being thrown in the streets and of famous film stars and personalities representing Rye Fawkes. Graham’s Way Could Be Completed By 12 August

New hope has emerged that “Graham’s Way”, the cycle footpath from Rye Harbour to Rye, will at last, be completed. The pathway was fought for by Brian Matthews whose son Graham was killed on the dangerous path-less road that claimed eleven lives over a period of forty years. Wheelers Visit Bosun’s for a Bite

It’s good to see young people starting their own businesses despite the prevailing financial problems we see around us.

One such lady is Noonie Woodhouse, who has just started out with the Bosun’s Bite Cafe’ at Rye Harbour. The Rye Wheelers ‘gentle run’ dropped in on Remembrance Sunday after a round trip from Rye to Rye Harbour via Appledore, Lydd and Camber.

The run to Rye Harbour had a reason other than tasting the excellent refreshments provided at the Bosun’s. They were taking a look at the cycle / footpath that they were involved in forcing East Sussex County Council to build. They noted that the final section was still to be completed. Report to follow next month.

The Ashdowns of New Romney
