It is with great sadness I report the news that Roger Breeds, former Mayor of Rye, has died.
Roger was a supporter of “Rye’s Own”. He regarded himself as a Ryer and so he was, for he is a direct line descendant of another Breeds who was Mayor of Rye in 1560 and 1569 also Member of Parliament for Rye from 1563 to 1572 in the days Continue reading Roger Breeds

Perhaps the Council’s most popular decision over the past 12 months was the appointment of a town steward for the Parish. In response to numerous complaints over the last few years, Nicky Ledger was appointed in January to help improve the appearance of the Parish and make Rye a more attractive place in which to live, work, study and visit. The BBC’s second adaptation of E. F. Benson’s Mapp & Lucia books is being produced in the streets of Rye through the summer. Whole streets have been been given a 1930 make-over and turned into film sets. E. F. Benson was Mayor of Rye for three years from 1934. Rusty Ellis passed away in her sleep, in her own own home, during her 101st year following a short illness. She was born in Bedfordshire before the start of WW1. Rusty was born Bessy Keech in Cardington near Bedford on the day that Florence Nightingale died. Two of the songs of the day were “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” and The Ballad of Casey Jones. Two fire appliances rushed up Rye Hill in the early hours of Monday morning (28 January) to fight a fire at Rye Cemetery.
The Chapel of Rest was burning well by the time they arrived and despite their efforts they were unable to save the roof. Extra water was obtained from a hydrant adjacent to the famous Top of the Hill pub & Restaurant, almost a quarter mile away. Christmas is upon us again. The old saying that time goes faster as you get older seems to be right. In the uncertain world we live in it sometimes seems a blessing to be getting old. A wise old Ryer once said, as far back as 1965, that he had lived the best years but the 40 years since then have not been so bad. What lies ahead for the youngsters of today?
