Cyclists set out in their hundreds from the Lifeboat Station in the shadow of Hastings Castle on a massive sponsored ride organised annually by St. Leonards Rotary Club. The destination was Pevensey Castle for those attempting the 25 mile return trip of Hurstmonceaux Castle for the more adventurous (or foolish) who decided they wanted a 40 mile round journey through some of the most beautiful countryside in East Sussex. Rye & District Wheelers have won the VTTA Reliability Trial Shield for the third year in succession. The event was the annual VTTA (Veteran Time Trial Association) Reliability Trial which started and finished at Bethersden on Sunday 3 February.

It was in the Parlour Bar of the Old Swan Hotel in Hastings High Street on a cool September evening that the first discussions about forming a bicycle club in the town took place.
Under the soft, flickering glow of candle and oil lighting a small group of men, including F. Garrett (son of a well known doctor of Havelock Road, Hastings), E. C. Gilbert and T. Butchers decided the time had come for Hastings & St. Leonards to have an official title, the few bicycle riders that the town boasted should ride together in one group for safety and comradeship. Rye Wheelers meet the Ardres Cyclists for the first time as guests in their famous Le Carre de Vallees 100k. Randonnee.
Eighteen Rye Wheelers set off on the 3.20 am. Ferry from Dover on
3 June and then cycled on to Ardres. They were met here by officials
from the Union of Cyclism for the Ardres Region and entertained to
