Goodbye Jimper – You Have Touched So Many Lives

Jimper  Leaves Rye for the Last Time

The funeral for Jimper at St. Mary’s Church was a very special event. Saying goodbye to a person whose presence was so powerful and who filled any room he entered, was not easy.

A very sad occasion was made so much easier in the knowledge that Jimper himself would have approved of all the arrangements that were made by his family and the wonderful support the Bonfire Boys gave by attending in Bonfire Dress and drumming him to the Church. Remembrance Day Parade – Sunday 8 November 2015

The Maroon exploded over Rye at 11 am. and people waiting around the War Memorial in the Churchyard for the Service of Remembrance in St. Mary’s to finish, fell silent in Pump Street and Church Square. All that could be heard were the cries of seagulls that had been frightened off the Church roof by the maroon. The silence lasted two minutes, until a second explosion marked the end of the allotted time. Continue reading Film – Rye Remembers 2015

Explosion at Dungeness

A Note from the Editor

I have been editing this magazine since 1965 and during that time have come across many exciting, interesting and talented people. The work of Albert Stribbling, an amazing man from Ashford, has never been published, I cannot think why. The following is a section from his unfinished book, these are all the words he has sent us and they are all included here for you to enjoy as I did.

Albert is racing to complete his book, we shall print anything from it he cares to send us, when you read the following chapters you will understand why I can say that without seeing them.

He is a descriptive writer who records modern social history and events with his pen. It is a fitting story to include in this very special issue of “Cinque Ports” Continue reading Explosion at Dungeness

Avro Vulcan’s Final Flight – Sunday 11 October

Last Chance to See this Iconic Aircraft.

by Jim Hollands.

I first came into close contact with a Vulcan Bomber when I was doing my National Service at RAF Andover in 1958. It did a low fly past over the airfield where a special afternoon was arranged to celebrate Battle of Britain Day. I remember being impressed by it’s power as the pilot turned up the throttles and powered it into an almost vertical climb. The noise was unbelievable.

I did not see that manoeuvre again until 55 years later when  Vulcan bomber, XH558, the last remaining aircraft of its type still flying, came to Rye and did an amazing display cumulating in that same power climb into the sky over Leasam that I had witness all those years before at Andover.
