100 Years of Rye Soccer

Football, the soccer variety, captured the imagination of the people of Rye well before the turn of the 19th. Century. There were doubtless many teams playing the old ‘kick and rush’ style of football in Rye and the surrounding districts in the days of the great Corinthians and Wanderers – but legend only tells the story of pre-1900 soccer matches played in the Town. Down Rye Way – Percy Sherwood

Regimental Town Crier

About two years ago Down Rye Way featured Percy’s father Mr. Frank (Jerry) Sherwood. So there is no need to establish Percy’s credentials as a Ryer of many generations’ standing. Percy is not quite sure whether he was born in Lion Street or Wish Street; either way, he went first to the Infants School in Lion Street and on to the Boys’ School in Mermaid Street. Jim Hollands

By Nan King

To compare Jimmy Hollands with Winston Churchill would make him blush, but by sharing the same birthday it has prompted me to think that many of the things that he has fought for on behalf of others, added to a rare pioneering spirit and the will to win, are qualities that shone in the great man himself.
