Two parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua’s Church in Rye were awarded “Bene Merenti” medals on behalf of the Pope at a special Moss on Monday 4 October, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. November, and again the streets of Rye will pulsate to the thuds of Bonfire Night on the thirteenth. This year many are pinning their hopes on a record collection. The secret effigy is ready and the celebrity booked. Now we all pray for fine weather so each and all can enjoy one of the biggest spectacles in our town. The poor old farmers took a pounding. A large acreage of peas near my home that were coming into bloom were laid flat. Still growing, they will be a hell of a job to combine come harvest. Tuesday in Rye was a lovely night. A new moon had appeared to announce a new lunar month on earth. We will mention no names to protect the innocent. Let’s just say a certain eating house in town entertained an Elvis Presley lookalike and the place was packed with well known faces. I was kicked out of my usual coffee house and eleven o clock and as I made my way to my car, the din from the restaurant drew my attention. I was spotted by a certain merrymaker and invited inside to partake an excellent with amicable revellers. We all knew each other and the banter was easy and lively. Being a long-shore fisherman, my interest lies with the beach and everything in or on it. the sheltered housing that has provided so many retired Ryers with
