Rye Bay West Keddle Nets

The Kettle, Kiddle or Keddle net as it is known around the Rye Bay area, is a very large trap type of net used around the coasts of Britain up to the end of the last century. It was used in many places where the tide went out and left enough sand or mud to work one. Five were still going in Wales up to the last war as also some were in the Thames Estuary, although they were very small affairs for the flat fish compared to the ones in Rye Bay, where they were often huge. Behind the gates….. Buckswood welcomes many new families to first Open Day of the year

This weekend the gates of Buckswood School between Hastings and Rye, were thrown open for the first Open Day of the year. Over 70 people visited the campus to find out about the school having seen the news about all the latest developments to the quirky campus including a woodland activity centre where the students shoot zombies for field archery practice, new sports fields and the laying of the foundations for a new Great Hall. Out with the Wheelers

The Rye & District Wheelers have featured in so many issues of “Rye’s Own” over the past 50 years. Mike Ashdown, who still rides with the Club today, was featured in that very first issue, winning the Wheelers 25 Mile Championship for the second year running. These days you are more likely to see him or his brother Jon, out on a club run with Steve Blattman than racing it out in time trials or on the track where he made such a name for himself and the Wheelers in the 1960’s.
