Regular readers of “Rye’s Own” will know how this magazine has always fought for keeping community assets for the use of Ryer’s, often against great pressure and determination of elected and unelected bodies who have had ‘other plans’ for our precious land and buildings. Down Rye Way – Kenneth Clark
It is hard to imagine “Rye’s Own” without Ken Clark. When I mentioned to him, shortly before his death, that I was toying with the idea of relaunching the magazine he was filled with enthusiasm and promised many more articles on the history of this small town he loved so well. He was one of the first pupils to join the new Rye Modern School in New Road (now Freda Gardham School) and left as soon as he was allowed to, to find employment. A Fireman Retires
“Today I am a fireman, tomorrow I shall be a sexagenarian.” With these words, Station Officer Bourn, fireman by instinct and tradition, addressed his men at his farewell party held at the Crown Hotel on Saturday, November 12th. Continue reading A Fireman Retires

RYE PERSONALITIES

The Oxford Dictionary describes the word sportsman as a person who regards life as a game in which his opponents must be allowed fair play, a person ready to play a bold game”—what better way then to introduce you to William (Blower) Pierce—Rye’s finest sportsman.
