Lions Aid Rye Playgroup

At their existing premises in Ferry Road, Rye Pre-school Playgroup at present take children from 2 to 5 years old from 8am to 5pm 50 weeks of the year. They are opening another unit at Tilling Green Community Centre next January to cater for toddlers below 2 years old.

The Playgroup is raising funds to equip the new centre and approached Rye and District Lions Club to see if they could help. Rye Lions were pleased to donate £250 towards this appeal. This follows an earlier donation the Lions made for new equipment two years ago. Rye Pre-School Playgroup has vacancies for children at both centres and any parents interested should contact Lisa Parker on 01797 226992.

Rye Lions have also made a third donation of £250 to Rye’s Wurlitzer Academy, making a total donation of £750 over the last two years since the Academy was started. This donation was made in memory of Pam Sayell, wife of Lion Colin Sayell, who was a keen fan of the Wurlitzer and also a Friend of Rye Wurlitzer. The Academy, located at Rye College, provides free classes for College students in playing the Wurlitzer by renowned international artist and organist, Michael Wooldridge.

Rye Lions intend taking part in Rye’s Christmas Festival on Saturday 8 December when their mascot, Leo the Lion, will be joining the procession with Father Christmas. They are also holding their Burns Night Brass Band Concert at Beckley Village Centre on Friday 25 January, actually on Burns Night. This starts at 7.45pm and tickets at £6.50, which includes a welcome refreshment, are on sale at Beckley Motors or on 0845 833 2825. Although almost two months ahead, tickets are already selling fast and the Concert has been fully booked over the last few years.

Rye Lions have been pleased to welcome new members recently and hope to recruit more in the New Year. Any adult in Rye or nearby villages interested in having fun raising money for those less fortunate and enjoying social events should ring 01797 252382 or look at their website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/ryedistrict/ .

Rye Lions President, Malcolm McDonough, presents a cheque for £250 to Lisa Parker of Rye Pre-school Playgroup with Lions Conrad Freezer and Roy Jowett.
