Police urge car owners in Hastings to be security conscious

Recent thefts from cars in the Hastings area have prompted police to ask owners to be vigilant.

Thieves have struck overnight during the past week. Sergeant Vikkie Ambrose, of the Hastings Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Car owners are advised to be wary and ensure their vehicles are adequately secured.

Man dies following assault in Hastings

POLICE

One of the two men assaulted in Havelock Road, Hastings on Friday morning (3 February) has sadly died.

Officers were called to the scene just before 1am after the victims, a 60-year-old and a 53-year-old, were found near the taxi rank with serious injuries.

Brian Hill, 60, from St Leonards was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he sadly passed away on Saturday afternoon (4 February). The other victim, who is also from St Leonards, remains in a stable condition in another hospital.

Two charged with robbing sunken warship in English Channel

Two men have been charged in connection with the alleged removal of items from a sunken Royal Navy warship in the English Channel.

HMS Hermes was a protected cruiser built in the late 19th century and converted into an aircraft ferry and depot ship ready for the outbreak of the First World War.

It was sunk by a German submarine in the Dover Strait in October 1914 with the loss of 44 lives.

Officers from Kent Police’s Rural Task Force launched an investigation in August 2015 after being informed that a number of historical artefacts had been reported missing from the wreck.

John Blight, 57, of Old River Way in Winchelsea, East Sussex, has now been charged with three counts of dishonestly failing to disclose items of wreck to the Receiver of Wreck with intent to make a gain.

Nigel Ingram, 56, of London Road, Teynham, has been charged with the same three counts in addition to being in possession of £16,000 worth of criminal property.

Both men have been bailed to appear before Margate magistrates on Thursday 2 March 2017.

The investigation into the alleged offences was carried out in partnership with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Marine Management Organisation, the Receiver of Wreck, Sussex Police, Historic England and the French authorities.

Robbery at Hastings Supermarket

Supermarket robbed of cash in Hastings

POLICE

Police are searching for robbers who stole cash from a supermarket in Hastings.

Just after 8.30pm on Tuesday (31 January) a man came into the Silverhill Supermarket in Sedlescombe Road North, Hastings, and after first asking for cigarettes, produced what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash from the till. Four more men then entered the store, and one of them hit the 35-year old male shop assistant in the face with an iron bar.

The first man then took what is believed to be several hundred pounds cash from the till and they all left the store.

The shop assistant was treated at Conquest Hospital for facial cuts and bruises.

All five suspects are described as black. The first man, who took the cash, is described as in his mid to late twenties, with a full beard, wearing a long green coat with the hood up.

They are believed to have left in a white van which drove away down Paynton Road.

Detective Constable David Brown said; “We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area and saw these men enter or leave the store. If you can help, or have any other information, please contact us via [email protected] quoting serial 1289 of 31/01.”

Robberies in Hastings

Witnesses needed to robberies at Subway and Sainsburys in Hastings

Police are seeking witnesses to a robbery and an assault on an 23-year old cashier, who was attacked at the Subway shop, in Bank Buildings, Hastings on Wednesday 11 January.

She was working behind the till when the robbery took place between 7.45pm and 8pm that day.

A man entered, selected some food, but when he went to pay he jumped over the counter and started to grab money from the till. When the cashier tried to prevent this a struggle ensued but the man got away with a small quantity of cash.

The cashier was shaken and sustained a minor finger injury.

The suspect is described as white, in his late 20’s, 5′ 6″, and of skinny build, with short brown hair and stubble. He was wearing a blue jacket.

Police are appealing for witnesses to an attack on a 63-year old Polegate woman who was robbed of her purse while she was walking along Cooden Sea Road, Bexhill between 4.25pm and 4.35pm on Wednesday 11 January.
