Rye was a boom town in the 1960’s – There were five television shops competing for business in the rapidly developing Television Era.

The Hollands’ business started at 55 Cinque Ports Street in 1957 and expanded quickly. Taking over Fred Taylor’s Restaurant for the winter of 1960 and then moving into 12 Cinque Ports Street in the Spring of 1961.

Jim Hollands Snr. was a remarkable salesman and was proclaimed number one salesman in the United Kingdom in 1962 when the firm sold 128 Hoover Washing machines in an eight week sales competition and topped the list of single selling units in the UK.

The firm won many television sales competition, winning a vintage Bentley for a customer and £1,000 for the shop in an RGD competition.

The film was taken at The Mermaid when the presentations took place.
