Historic window badly damaged at Rye parish church

Despotic Act of Vandalism

Historic St Mary’s Church, Rye, has had one of its most valuable stained glass windows smashed and removed.

The damage is believed to have occurred between 10.45pm and 08.45am on the night of Monday/Tuesday 29/30 August. Police are continuing to investigate.

The 12th Century parish church is in the centre of Rye and the damaged window was dedicated to the memory of Dr John Adamson and his wife, Jane. It was given by members of their family in about 1882.

It is the church’s oldest window and was the work of C.E Kempe. The lower, damaged part of the window was a vivid representation of the Lord giving sight to a blind man. Continue reading Historic window badly damaged at Rye parish church

Goodbye Jimper – You Have Touched So Many Lives

Jimper  Leaves Rye for the Last Time

The funeral for Jimper at St. Mary’s Church was a very special event. Saying goodbye to a person whose presence was so powerful and who filled any room he entered, was not easy.

A very sad occasion was made so much easier in the knowledge that Jimper himself would have approved of all the arrangements that were made by his family and the wonderful support the Bonfire Boys gave by attending in Bonfire Dress and drumming him to the Church. There was a hushed silence as Gary Bourn paid tribute to his father’s life and recalled many of the incidents in Michael’s very active and eventful time from his birth on 16 August 1938. Continue reading The Last Shout

Did You Go to Sunday School

By  Vic Chalfont

Hearing these days of the churches having various problems and falling congregations, I thought it might be of interest the part churches used to play in everyday life.
