Bonwen Ewing
The British Women’s National Championship at Llandeilo on Sunday 5 September was a closely fought battle with 27 seconds covering the first three over the 32 kilometres they faced. Repeating her success of last year Emma Pooley (Cervelo Test Team), hardened by a season of highly successful road racing on Europe’s roads, finished with 44-30, just 19 seconds faster than the Queen of domestic time trialling Julia Shaw (UTAG-Yamaha) while Olympian Wendy Houvenaghel (Bike Chain Ricci) was a further eight seconds behind Pooley. Pooley’s team mate Sharon Laws, champion in 2008, was fourth. 1-04 off of Pooley’s pace. Fifth was Emma Trott (Moving Ladies), who like the previous four broke the 26mph barrier. Local rider, Bronwen Ewing of the Rye & District Wheelers, showed guts and class in this company. One of very few club riders in the event, she stormed round the Welsh course, where a crowd of many thousands had gathered, and finished in 15th. place, well ahead of many quality riders. Bronwen, who has been riding with a painful knee condition this season, is due for an operation in October and will be ready for the 2011 season. If she is this good with one leg then other competitors need to watch out, what will she be like with two? Bronwen Ewing has already won a National Team Championship for the Wheelers. Bronwen Liz King and Ali Steed won the Ladies National Best All Rounder Team Competition in 2009. Bronwen is a tough lady and has expressed a wish to compete in the 2011 National 24 Hour Championship which comes to Sussex for the first time in many years. Her credentials are good, she was the Kent Cycling Association Ladies Twelve Hour Champion in 2009. Who could doubt her ability to carry off the individual National “24” title next year?
