A man was stuck in the mud up to his chest in the river-bed near the Monkbretton Bridge on Sunday May 25th.
A thirty minute ordeal for the man, 28 year old Michael Ray Joseph of Tenterden, began at 7 am. an eye witness reported, when he walked down the mud to recover a bottle, he slipped and became stuck in a mud hole.
The drama continued when the caller gave the location as Rye Harbour. Two Fire Appliances from Rye were sent and by the time they discovered that the man was trapped at the Fishmarket Rye and not Rye Harbour, a good period of time had elapsed.
A further Fire Appliance was dispatched from Hastings.
The Rye Firemen arrived at the scene at about 7. 20 am. they ran a ladder down the mud and within ten minutes had the man free. He was taken to the Royal East Sussex Hospital, Hastings and was detained.
