Bonfire Drummers Will Lead Cortège To St. Mary’s Church.
One of Rye’s best loved characters will be laid to rest today, Friday 8 July.
Jimper Sutton’s Funeral Cortège will be led by Bonfire Society drummers from the Landgate to St. Mary’s Church, Rye for the 11 am. Service.
Bonfire Societies from all over East Sussex will be represented, many in traditional Bonfire Society dress, to honour the legendary Rye Bonfire Boy .
Jimper was a long time Chairman of the Rye Society and in later years Life President. He claimed the proudest moment of his long and active life was when he was chaired by the Robertsbridge Centurions from the Landgate to the Fair Salts to light the 2014 Rye Bonfire.
After the Service at Rye the will be a private family service at Hastings. The family will then return to the Reception at the Ypres Castle Inn, a place where Jimper spent much time writing his famous Jottings, novels and short stories. The painting of him by Rye artist Marina Kim hangs in the bar here.
