Rye’s Own glamourous pop stars the ‘Cheeky Girls’ were at Rye Harbour on Saturday 22 March to support efforts to raise money for the Youth Club.
Monica and Gabriela had been rushed by their father Ray from Hartlepool to get to the village in time for the Auction of Promises. They kept their promise to attend despite their plans being altered by the start of the Iraq War. They were expecting to return from Germany well in time for the auction but the trip was postponed and they appeared in the North of England instead, making the journey back to Rye Harbour a race against the clock.
Young fans noticed that the girls’ hair had ‘grown’. Gabriela explained that they had hair extensions for a new video to promote their new single “Take Your Shoes Off”, which is being released in May.
The theme of the video leans towards the ‘Grease’ look with the girls dressed in Rah Rah skirts and Pom Poms for the first part, then in blouses and black tight trousers reminiscent of the way Olivia Newton John dressed in the famous film.
Auctioneer Jim Hollands sold the forty or so lots under the hammer, including two records signed by Monica & Gabriela which realised £100, and a Balloon Trip donated by the Headcorn based Balloon Company for another useful sum. The sale totalled over £500 and goes some way to helping with the promotion of the Rye Harbour Youth Club.
Marcus Whittaker organised the auction, he must be congratulated on his unstinting efforts to encourage young and old alike in Rye Harbour. He edits and publishes a monthly magazine which has been well accepted and is fast becoming established. His involvement with the youth of the village is of special merit, he is giving much of his free time to give youngsters something interesting and rewarding to do with their spare time.
