The aim of this year’s Pride in Rye was to move on from the more traditional activities of tidying neglected areas and litter-picking to a more “pro-active” approach of correct litter/ waste disposal. So, with this background in mind a green “poster” was posted in all of Rye’s car-parks, as well as being circulated to the Rye Chamber of Commerce and the Rye & District Hotel & Caterers Association for their members, and was also posted at other strategic places in the town.

The “Pride in Rye” week then kicked off with the visit of the “Rethink Rubbish Bus” on Monday over 40 people visited the bus in Budgens car-park, where they also took the opportunity to flag up the lack of cardboard and kerb-side recycling facilities, as well as there being nowhere to take green waste in the Rye area, and no Household Waste tip in the area – it’s a 40 mile round-trip to Hastings or Mountfield!

On Thursday evening 21 July, Councillor Eric Armstrong chaired a demonstration of the new graffiti-removing kits at Rye Town Hall for Rye and the surrounding villages.
“We really hope that the various key activities during this year’s “Pride in Rye” week have demonstrated to everyone – residents and visitors alike – the very great importance of responsible waste and litter disposal. It’s high time that we got away from clearing up unnecessary litter, and concentrated more on making everyone aware of the importance of caring for Rye’s very precious environment.” Commented Yolanda Laybourne, Rye Town Manager.
