This is a cautionary tale and I have cut corners in the telling. Rye’s trawler fleet has been decimated by the European Union over the past few decades and although a new Fishing Quay is finally under construction the part played by the Rye Fishmarket Project in the whole story has been written out of this shortened account which focuses on our failure to dredge Rye’s Strand Quay…something which has been done every few years since time immemorial. Amazing Day for Rye St. John

On Saturday 18 December Julie and Neville Bettley of Rye St. John Ambulance stood in open mouth amazement as Reg Walker, Charity Steward of the Rye Masonic Wellington Lodge, announced that “He who laughs last, laughs longest” and revealed a donation of £13,750 to the Ambulance Appeal.

Julie Bettley told me afterwards that they had been expecting a couple of hundred pounds and were absolutely staggered when the amount was announced.
