“A few weeks ago I was given some back numbers of Rye’s Own” writes Len Case from Hailsham. “Reading through them and remembering all those names and faces well, I overdosed on nostalgia, although tinged with sadness at the passing of others”.
Some of those in the picture are : John Hunt, Clive Wratten, Dick Tiltman, Peter Dee, Francis Sinden, Mr. Balcombe, Ronnie Adams, John Bannister, Cliff Bloomfield, Len Case, Bob Hobbs and Laurie Stevens.
Len enclosed this photograph of Rye Church Choir, taken on a Psalm Sunday around 1933-34. He has named most of those in the picture, no doubt other names will come forward.
Nostalgia makes up a big part of “Rye’s Own” and readers keep things going by sending in their pictures and memories of times past. This photograph was loaned by Veronica Vincent who now lives at Folkestone. The four pictured are L to R : Barrington-Widdup, Jo’ Vincent, Veronica Vincent and Kevin Barry. It was taken sometime in the mid fifties.
The photograph above shows the Rye & District Wheelers at the 1967 Faversham Gala Sports meeting in Easter 1967. Riders with the red stripe across their shirts are Dave Ashdown and Jim Hollands at the start of the 880 scratch event with Ian (Spotty Muldune) Sinden standing in the background.
Pictures of Rye People in Rye or of Rye people in strange places are always welcome. Please keep sending them in. Ed.
