The Mermaid sponsored “Triples” Bowls competition held at Rye on Sat 31 July was won by Peasmarsh Bowls Club. Husband and wife couple Alf and Wendy Boorman together with Pete Maylam made up the team. They played their three games without losing a match. Their high aggregate of shots won ensured a fine result over Hollington B.C. and Westfield B. C. who were second and third respectively.
Twenty-four teams from all over Sussex and Kent, and even further afield, as in the case of Reading, took part. There was also a team from the Visually Handicapped, a first for the Rye Triples competition. This team, using “Mat” Jack, telescopes, walkie talkies, description and instruction from sighted observers, put on a good showing winning the first of their three matches and being very competitive in the other two.
Mermaid proprietor Judith Blincow, Vice President and sponsor of Rye Bowls Club, presented the “Triples Shield”. President Frank Mann and Captain John Smith must have been well pleased with the day. A full compliment of 24 teams and a brilliant summers day resulted in an event that will be long remembered, even the on going problems with Rother District Council over the clubs proposal to find room to park half a dozen vehicles on the area behind the toilets was put into the background as Rother made special dispensation for this event and allowed a parking area on the Salts to accommodate the visiting teams..
Bowls is a game that is now enjoyed by old and young alike, there is no discrimination between the sexes, it can be enjoyed by anyone who likes spending time outdoors and who is competitive.
