Rye’s local running group, Rye Runners, has just celebrated its first birthday. ‘The fact that we celebrated post-run with tea and cakes demonstrates that our weekly outings are just as much about the social as the physical,’ says founder Sam Murphy, who coaches the group alongside her husband, Jeff Pyrah. ‘We welcome runners of all levels of ability and experience,’ says Sam. ‘And we structure the sessions so that everyone gets to work at their own level – and no one gets left behind. Many of our regulars have completed their first 5km, 10km or half marathon races since joining.’ Sam, a running and fitness journalist and author, has just completed a book called Real Women Run, due to be published in March 2012 – and many of the Rye Runners will feature within its pages. ‘When it came to the photography for the book, I couldn’t resist the opportunity of getting the production team down from London,’ she explains. ‘With miles of footpaths, scenic country lanes and Camber Sands on our doorstep, it seemed crazy not to,’ she says. ‘And, of course, I had a willing group of female runners to be my models!’ Rye Runners meets every Saturday morning at 9am on The Salts, Rye.
