A petition of almost 1000 signatures was presented by the Mayor of Rye, Councillor Paul Carey, to Graham Gubby, leader of the Rother District Council on the steps of Rother Headquarters in Bexhill on Monday 16 February.
The petition, which calls for a realistic grant to Run the Rye Tourist Information Centre, is the result of Rother’s short sighted decision to reduce the annual grant from fifty to thirty thousand pounds.
Feeling has been growing in Rye that the District Council, which is in effect, controlled by Bexhill Councillors, has been treating Rye unfairly and favouring Bexhill in almost every sphere of its activities. Failure to revise their decision and grant Rye a respectable amount to run the T.I.C. may well be ‘the straw that breaks the camel’s back’ and lead to demands that Rye be given control of its own finances and destiny. Already there are rumblings among Rye Town Councillors that moves should be taken with this target in mind.
