Rye British Legion At Dunkirk

In glorious sunny early autumn weather Rye & District British Legion, led by the Branch President Col Anthony Kimber, visited Dunkirk and its hinterland to consider the May 1940 operations. Highlights of the visit included time at Cassel which was a place of intense fighting during the rearguard actions; a visit to the Dunkirk Memorial Museum, the Town British Memorial and the evacuation beaches. The party sought out the isolated Bertenacre Commonwealth Wargraves Commission graveyard to lay a wreath on the grave of Rye soldier Private Colling of the 5th Royal Sussex. Branch Padre, Canon Hugh Moseley officiated and Chairman Neale East laid a wreath at the grave. The party of 50, included veterans from the Army, RAF and British Legion Women’s Section, family members from Rye of some who fell at Dunkirk and a wide cross section of other interested individuals.
