Saturday 2nd – Sunday 10th February 2013 School for Scallops
The medieval town of Rye, on the Sussex coast, is home to one of the biggest scallop celebrations in Europe. From 2nd – 10th February 2013 the ancient Cinque Ports town gives itself over to the mouth-watering shellfish during the Rye Bay Scallop Week. Rye’s restaurants, hotels and pubs are already taking bookings for gourmet scallop evenings and quirky scallop events. Webbe’s at the Fish Cafe will be running its popular Scallop School where you can learn to prepare and then devour six scrumptious courses including dishes such as carpaccio of scallop and scallop cerviche. Dishes on Webbe’s menu will include pan fried scallops with caramelised apple, black pudding and cider jus or you why not try the seared scallops with pork tail confit sausage.
The famous Mermaid Inn is featuring butter-poached, smoked and pan-fried scallop dishes on its menu, whilst Simply Italian promises a scallop themed risotto.
A fun night of Scallop Bingo will be on offer at the cosy Standard Inn during the Rye Bay Scallop Week and there will also be a fun Scallop Quiz for seafood aficionados and anyone else keen to test their shellfish and general knowledge. Rye’s own fishing fleet will be landing thousands of the tasty bivalves over the next few weeks and the Rye Bay Scallop Week is a perfect opportunity to experience the freshest shellfish and fish – straight from boat to plate.
