A new exhibition at Roche Gallery in Rye showcases a fascinating selection of portraits by local artist Marina Kim. The exhibition features newly-completed works and earlier commissions loaned back to the gallery by their owners. Many of the faces were familiar to residents of the town and some were at the shop in person!
Marina has received numerous commissions since moving to Rye in 2001. A highly accomplished artist and printmaker working in a wide variety of styles and media, she has become known especially for her wonderful skill as a portrait painter who combines unrivalled artistic observation with psychological in-sight.
Marina trained at the Republican Art College in Tashkent, before moving to Rye, where she and her husband Tim opened Roche Gallery in 2001. Marina works from life or from photographs and in almost any graphic medium, and will be happy to accept new commissions during the exhibition.
To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Roche Gallery hosted a book-signing. Local author and actress Monica Janssens, whose novel Castle in the Clouds was launched at the event, attended the opening to sign copies of her new book. Above is Marina’s recently-executed portrait of the author.
Roche Gallery is located at 93 High Street in the heart of Rye. Opening times are 10-5.30 daily except Tuesday and Wednesday. The exhibition runs until 14th July.
