Hastings Deputy Mayor, Judy Rogers was greeted by the Buckswood School Bagpipe Band when she visited the school to try the apple juice made by the students with fruit from the School’s orchard this week. Commenting on the juice, the Deputy Mayor said that it ‘tasted very good’ and was fascinated to learn more about the project from Buckswood Headteacher, Mark Redsell.
Students made the most of the Autumn sunshine and took a break from their classroom studies to pick fruit. This year’s harvest of apples was picked in two batches from the school orchard which sits next to the vineyard. The first batch of apples were made into crumbles and pies for dessert served in the Dining Hall and the second batch was delivered to a farm Biddenden to be pressed. 700 bottles of juice were made, which students will sell with all proceeds going to charity. “Activities like this are what I love about Buckswood” said Student, Elias 14, “I don’t know many friends who get try so many different things at their school”.
“Buckswood excels at getting outside the classroom, giving students hands on experiences and seeing how the world works for themselves.” Said Page Fourteen Headteacher Mark Redsell “We are fort u n a t e t o have over 40 acres of camp u s wh i c h provides ample cross-curricular opportuni t ies in projects such as our vineyard, green energy initiatives and now making apple juice! Every subject in our wide curriculum and stud e n t s c a n benefit from one of the many activities happening on site. Ou r n e xt s t a g e o f plans will see trenches being dug in the woods, foundations being laid for the Great Hall and a second swimming pool being installed at the girls boarding house.”
