Rye Community Centre was once again the venue for the annual flower and vegetable show. Entries from residents of Rye and beyond brought their flowers, veg, handicraft and cookery produce to compete in 56 classes. Despite the challenging growing conditions this year, the standard of the Flowers and Vegetables was impressively high. The Banksian Medal, the award for the person with the highest number of place points in the Horticultural classes was presented to Henry Carter. He also won the Veg class. Yvonne Vicarey was awarded the Turk Trophy, for the Allotment Association member with the highest number of place points in the Horticultural classes. Helen Redmond won the cookery and handicraft classes with son Alex winning the over 8 children’s category. Amy Massey won the prize in the under 7 category. Lorna Hall won the Flower Category and Janette Ireland took the prize in the photography section.
Priscilla Ryan presented the prizes. Helena Hudd and her team from Rye Allotments Association who organised the event said ‘I was delighted to see the range of entries this year. The weather has really conspired against growers but as ever gardeners have shown they are equal to the challenge. We are grateful to local businesses who sponsored categories and placed adverts in the show schedule thereby enabling the event to take place. Thanks too to the ladies of Landgate W.I. who provided refreshments.
