Gordon Davis of the Thornton Road Club competed in the event in memory of his son Andrew who had competed in 2001 but sadly died in 2002.

Gordon, who is almost eighty, has been racing in time trials since 1954. He is pictured below, rounding the Brenzett roundabout with four miles to go.

Town Crier’s Starting Bell

When I Ring my Bell ………

Rye Town Crier, Rex Swain, uttered the immortal words “When I ring my bell, peddle like hell” and 83 cyclists set of on a ride that took them through the winding back lanes of kent to Hythe.

On the way the course was brilliantly sign posted and Marshalled by members of the Rye & District Rotary Club and ‘Noel’s Snack Bar’ was set up in its traditional place on the intersection at Old Romney, where riders enjoyed complimentary biscuits and bananas. Wheelers Trip to France 2016

Cross Channel Jaunt

Ten of the more senior members of Rye & District Wheelers ( average age 70 )  made a trip across the Channel from Dover on Tuesday 26 July 2016 and rode a circular route from Calais via Gravelines, Audruicq, Ardres and back along the Canal Road to Calais.

Over thirty members of the Rye & District Wheelers were present at ARRCC for their 2016 Barbecue.

The Herald of Rye

Over 100 years ago “The Herald of Rye”, a magazine very similar in it’s aims to “Rye Own”, was published by Harry Davis who lived at ‘Watlands’ Udimore Road. Harry was involved in many Rye Clubs and Committees. He was Secretary of Rye Cycling Club and Rye Sports Day Committee, so was the ideal chap to edit the local magazine. The following competitions were announced in an 1897 issue of The Herald. 50 Years The Royal Visit

Fifty years seems a long time but looking back to 1965 from 2015 it seems not so long at all.

“Rye’s Own” was started with the intention that it should report and support Rye. There can be no doubt that it has always done that, although in those early days Rye Borough Council was running the town’s affairs in a very efficient and effective way and the magazine did not find itself at the forefront of political confrontation as it does in this modern age. The Rye Wheelers Tuesday run is a comfortably paced ride that anyone who rides a bike fairly regularly can easily manage.
