Rye Wheelers “50” Championship 2010

Steve & Bronwen are the Champions

Rye Wheelers 50 Mile Time Trial Championships

On an almost perfect morning the 2010 Rye & District Wheelers 50 Mile Championship (incorporated in the VTTA “50”) was keenly fought out on a Romney Marsh course.

17 riders, thirteen men and four ladies, took the starter’s signal and rode off at minute intervals. They were cheered on by other club members and cyclists from other clubs scattered around the course.

Last year’s Champion, Dave Wheeler, has moved on to the In Gear Team, but Steve Gooch (1-56-45) became the new Champion, beating Dave’s last year winning time by over a minute, an amazing result which now stands as the Championship record.

Barry Goodsell, finishing earlier than Steve Gooch, had only missed the old record by 48 seconds! It was another great day for the Wheelers with other very fast rides. Nick Wilson, riding his first Championship 50, did a ride of 2-01-58, Bob Giles (2-05-05) won the VTTA event, Mark Amon and Rod Harrow recorded personal best rides of 2-11-05 and 2-11-55 respectively and Andy croft managed a fine 2-14-33.

What about the Ladies? Bronwen Ewing’s 1-09-32 won the Ladies Championship plus she was also the fastest lady in a sixty strong field that made up the whole event. Julie Bryant knocked over seven minutes off her personal best time to take the runner-up spot and Carmen Kubisa was third before having to rush off to prepare and cook forty lunches.

Channel Challenge

On the same day, Paul Simpson led another section of the club to take part in “The 50 mile Channel Challenge” Charity Ride The ride started at St Mary in the Marsh, and riders enjoyed good flat riding over the Romney Marshes
