Rye Chosen for Hospice Neighbours Launch

When you are living with a life limiting illness, the world doesn’t stop and there are many everyday tasks that still need to be done. For those living with illness, the added upset of facing an overgrown garden that cannot be maintained or the difficult decision of losing a much loved pet that can’t be exercised can add even more distress to an already testing time. A new service provided by St Michael’s Hospice and launching in Rye aims to alleviate these pressures by seeking ‘Hospice Neighbours’ to help those in need.

Jane Cave, of St Michael’s Hospice, said, “Hospice Neighbours, a brand new service to be provided by St Michael’s Hospice, aims to assist those within the community who require just a little help from their neighbours and in turn allow them to spend quality time with their friends and family. Hospice Neighbours are local volunteers who are able to give at least two hours a week to walk the dog, mow the lawn, cook, shop or even just stop by for a cup of tea and a chat!”

Offering a small amount of your time will make a real difference to patients and their families and friends when they need it most. No specific skills are required – just the ability to get on with people and a desire to help. St Michael’s Hospice will provide training and offer support whenever needed.

Jane continued, “Volunteers will only be asked to provide help to someone who lives near to them and won’t be required to help with anything medical or related to personal hygiene. You’ll be able to claim travel and small expenses and all we ask is that applicants are aged over 18 and live within Hastings and Rother.”

Training will start in February/March 2013 and the service will initially launch in Rye, Northiam and Ore Village. If you live in these areas and would like to find out more or apply to become a Hospice Neighbour, please call 01424 445177 or email [email protected] by 31st Decembe.
