69 Year Old Rye Man Jailed for 42 Days.

Refused to Pay his Council Tax

A man who lives at The Mint in Rye was jailed for 42 days at Hastings Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday 7 October)

He claimed that to pay his £1,800 plus Council Tax Bill owing to Rother District Council would be a ‘Criminal Offence’ under the Terrorism Act of 2000, as it may be used by the Government to spend on ‘Illegal’ foreign wars. He claimed that if he paid he would be breaking the law.

He went on to say “I have never refused to pay tax but I am refusing to commit an illegal act: to hand over money for the purpose of terrorist actions.”

Christopher Coverdale’s claim that Council Taxes were funding terrorist action had previously been deemed ‘Without merit’ by the High Court and Court of Appeal.

This was the thirteenth time Rother had taken Mr. Coverdale to court over this outstanding account.

The District Judge refused to consider his plea as the hearing was purely to determine whether he could not or would not pay the fee and imposed an immediate custodial sentence.
