First Stone is Layed

Badger Gate Project is Under Way

On 6th October an important event took place on Mason Field at Ferry Road. The foundation stone for the new block of flats being built for the old people of the town was laid by Mrs. H. J. Wood, wife of the late Mr. H. J. Wood our Town Clerk for nine years. Mr. Wood was a staunch supporter of the old folk of the town, and the building of homes for them came high on his list of priorities.

The flat-lets will be completed next Spring and there will be over 30 bed-sitters in the block also a common room and a television lounge. The site is well chosen, well back from the main road but not too far away from the town centre.

At the stone laying ceremony, the Mayor, Alderman W. J. Hacking thanked Mrs. Wood on behalf of the Council and people of Rye for consenting to lay the Foundation Stone.

Watched by members of the Council and many local people, Mrs. Wood stepped forward as the stone was uncovered and with a firm workmanlike style she tapped it into place.

The inscription on the stone reads:— THIS STONE WAS LAID ON OCTOBER 6th BY MRS. HENRY J. WOOD, WIFE OF THE LATE HENRY J. WOOD, TOWN CLERK.
