An Old Friend Returns to Rye

SAP 201 Returns

“Rye’s Own” is making a film about a Famous Rye Fire Appliance and the men who served with her.

This is just a short sequence showing the old pump’s return to Rye after almost 50 years away from the Ancient Town she served so well in the 1960’s and early 70’s.

Retired Fireman, Bob Rogers and his son Shaun, who now serves with Rye Firefighters, were there to meet her and new owner Mike Garrett from Hawkhurst, who rescued the vintage fire engine from a shed in Bedale Yorkshire and returned her to Hawkhurst for restoration.

Mike has done a lot of work on the old girl so far and now she is in Rye for her paintwork to be touched up. The most moving part of this sequence is of Bob Rogers’ grandsons reuniting the engine with her original Rye Plates that had been kept by the Rye Firemen when she left the Station in 1971. Who would have guessed then, that 45 years on she would be displaying the Rye name again.

The full story of SAP 201’s Return to Rye will be featured in the July Issue of “Rye’s Own” – The film will be completed after the Old Fire Engine, restored and running under her own steam makes a special visit to the New Rye Station sometime in 2017.

Well done Mike Garrett – You deserve a medal for brining this fine old lady home.
